Antibiotic Treatment
infected gum area
around tooth
Periodontal disease is sometimes treated with deep scaling and root planing to remove plaque buildup and bacteria from infected areas.

During this procedure, an antibiotic may be applied to the infected gums.

Microsphere technology is used to deliver the antibiotic over time directly to the infected areas in the gums.

The microspheres gradually release the antibiotic over time, allowing the antibiotic to work over the course of 14 days.

Over the 14 days, the antibiotic helps the scaling and root planing fight the infection, allowing the gums to heal. Bone growth is not likely to occur, however.

The powder antibiotic used is applied quickly. There should be no discomfort when it is applied. After the antibiotic treatment, avoid touching treated areas Wait 12 hours after treatment before brushing teeth Wait 10 days before using floss, toothpicks, or other devices. Avoid food that could hurt the gums for 1week
Gum disease can recur and needs to be checked regularly.
