Dental Benefits -- how it works
|
Dental coverage is the fastest-growing employee benefit. It is offered to employees or members through companies, unions, and associations. Dental benefits, however, vary from one plan to the next.
Who decides the benefits in a plan?
The company buying it, such as your employer. Plans generally cover 50-80% of the cost of a dental service. A few cover as little as 30% or as much as 100% of dental fees. Some plans cover a full range of dental treatments; others exclude many services as dental implants and orthodontic care.
Some plans base the amount of your benefit on a schedule of fees which were arbitrarily developed. If so, you may receive less reimbursement than your dental plan appears to promise. For example, if your plan pays 80% of the cost of dental treatment, it may mean 80% of the fee chosen by the insurance company, no the actual fee charged by this or any practice.
Plans vary in another important way. most allow you to choose your own dentist; others encourage you to receive care from a limited number of dentists. Because we value our relationship with you, we believe you should have the right to seek care from the dentists of your choice.
Your treatment plan is determined by your dental needs and your general health, not by your dental benefit plan. It is not in your best interest to compromise your dental treatment to fit an insurance programs benefits. Dr. Schwartz and Dr. Berube will discuss the treatment plan with you. You will make the decision, not your insurance company.
We are happy to submit a pretreatment estimate of charges initially to your insurance company. When we receive a response to our inquiry, from your insurance company, we will mail out a copy for your files. At your convenience, please call our office to discuss the insurance payment options and schedule the appointments necessary for your treatment. We are happy to answer your questions or concerns.
