Please do not wear removable tooth replacement appliance unless you specifically have been requested to do so.  Be sure to follow the directions given to you. Many people experience a headache following the procedure. This is typically of no significance and the prescribed medicine usually brings relief.

Please leave your sutures intact. Eat soft foods. And, as much as possible, please try to chew on untreated areas of your mouth. Your diet should contain a lot of protein and fluids. Milk shakes are great (doctors orders).

Avoid excessive exertion for 48 hours following surgery. Swelling and discomfort can be minimized by holding an ice pack on the outside of your face and cold water inside your mouth, adjacent to the treated area.  This should be done for several hours, keeping cold on for ten minutes and removing it for ten minutes. Swelling does not usually mean there is an infection. If mild swelling and puffiness do occur after the first day, apply a warm moist compress to the affected area. Swelling usually peaks on the third day after treatment. A small amount of blood in the saliva is normal for the first 24 hours. Excessive bleeding which you can not control with simple pressure is not normal and should be reported immediately.

Medications

Please follow the instructions on any prescribed medications very carefully. Prescriptions given for discomfort need to be taken only so long as you feel that you need them. Mild discomfort is best treated by nonprescription medicine, such as Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Advil (ibuprofen). Antibiotic prescriptions, including mouth rinses, should be used as directed.  This is very important. Smoking should be avoided as it can be very damaging. Alcohol consumption should be avoided for 24 hours, or as directed on your prescription bottles.
